Kawasaki Specifies Parvus DuraMAR(R) Mobile Router Into Rail Car Internet Protocol (IP) Computer Architecture Eurotech North American Unit Receives Order for 150 DuraMAR Network Routers From Kawasaki Rail Car for New York MTA's Metro-North Railroad SALT LAKE CITY, UT--(MARKET WIRE)--Nov 20, 2008 -- Parvus Corporation, a US subsidiary of
the Eurotech Group, today announced that Kawasaki Rail Car,
Inc. has
ordered 150 DuraMAR® 1000 routers for installation
on new M-8 passenger
rail cars for the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority's
Metro-North Railroad (MNR). These ruggedized Cisco 3200-based
mobile
routers are specified into the rail cars' next-generation
Internet Protocol
(IP)-based computer network infrastructure. The order is
valued at
approximately $1.6 Million. Deliveries are scheduled to
start in 2009. MNR
is the second busiest commuter railroad in the United States,
providing
approximately 275,000 customer trips each weekday and some
80 million trips
per year. Kawasaki will fit the new M-8 rail cars with a version of the Parvus DuraMAR 1000 IP router especially configured for rolling stock installations, enabling advanced on-board routing functionality, including Quality of Service (QoS), VLAN, remote diagnostics (SNMP), and mobile IP for remote access management. MNR currently utilizes a legacy version of the DuraMAR router onboard its Budd M3A rail car fleet, in conjunction with the train's Event Recorder and Diagnostics Systems (ERDS) to monitor vehicle health data and maintain the fleet. The DuraMAR is a hardened network router leveraging Cisco's industry standard IOS® software and Cisco 3200 series hardware to deliver secure data, voice and video communications to mobile network nodes across wired and wireless networks. Underscoring its rugged design and robust capabilities, the DuraMAR is also in use today onboard naval ships, armored vehicles, military helicopters, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
