Some of us cringe at the thought of spending every day in a crowded shopping mall. Not Centro Properties Group. The real estate investment trust owns and manages hundreds of retail shopping centers in Australia and New Zealand. Centro built a portfolio in the US, but sold off several of its American properties in 2008 to reduce debt. Before the cash crunch Centro acquired Heritage Property Investment Trust, as well as seven mall properties from fellow Aussie real estate bigwig Westfield Group in 2006. The following year the company bought New York-based New Plan Excel Realty Trust, which added more than 450 community shopping centers in 38 states to Centro's portfolio.
