Investor Philip Anschutz has left his heart in San Francisco. Anschutz created the SF Newspaper Co. in 2004 when the admitted "news junkie" acquired the San Francisco Examiner, a five-day-a-week tabloid newspaper, and Bay Area papers the San Francisco Independent and the San Mateo Independent. The Examiner also publishes a weekend edition. The Examiner's main competition is Hearst Newspapers' San Francisco Chronicle. The company also includes the Grant Printing Co. and the Examiner's "Bay to the Breakers" race. The company is part of The Anschutz Corporation based in Denver. The Examiner was first published in 1865 and was owned by The Hearst Corporation until it was sold to the Fang family in 2000.
