Shares of some top gold companies were up at the close of trading:
Barrick Gold rose $3.38 or 7.9 percent, to $46.07.
Gold Fields rose $.64 or 4.3 percent, to $15.42.
Goldcorp rose $2.76 or 6.6 percent, to $44.76.
Newmont Mining rose $2.02 or 3.8 percent, to $55.66.
