General Dynamics unit wins $2.2 billion contract

General Dynamics unit awarded $2.2 billion Army contract for light armored vehicles

NEW YORK (AP) -- A Canadian unit of defense contractor General Dynamics Corp. has won a $2.2 billion contract from the U.S. Army for 724 light armored vehicles.

General Dynamics Land Systems-Canada says the vehicles are intended for the Army's foreign military sale program. Vehicle deliveries are set to begin in April 2011.

The LAV II vehicles being provided are 300 horsepower 8x8 vehicles weighing up to 32,000 lbs.

Shares of Falls Church, Va.-based General Dynamics were up 18 cents to $67.50 in after-hours trading, after slipping 20 cents to close the regular session at $67.32.
